What Does an Oxygen Chamber Feel Like?

Pressure, ears & the two-hour experience.

If you’ve never been inside an oxygen chamber, the unknown is usually the biggest question: what happens to your ears, what does the pressure feel like, and what are two hours actually like once you’re inside?

Most common first question
“What will it actually feel like?”
In short

The most noticeable part for many first-time guests is the change in pressure during entry and exit. Your ears may feel full or need to equalise, similar to the sensation some people notice during an aeroplane climb or descent. Once the chamber reaches its operating conditions, the experience is generally about sitting comfortably for two hours — reading, working, listening to something or simply switching off. Individual experiences vary.

What you may notice

Three parts of the experience feel different

1

Pressurising

This is when your ears are most likely to notice the pressure change.

2

Two hours inside

Once settled, the session becomes much more about comfort, time and how you choose to spend it.

3

Returning to normal pressure

You may notice another pressure change as the chamber returns to normal atmospheric conditions before exit.

01
Pressure & ears

What does the pressure feel like in your ears?

Pressure changes affect the air spaces of the middle ear. That is why your ears are often the first place you notice that chamber pressure is changing.

For some people the sensation is familiar from flying: fullness, a need to equalise, or a “pop” as pressure balances. For others it may feel more noticeable. Experiences vary.

“It feels like you’re going up in a plane.”

Do not ignore ear pain

The middle ear needs to equalise as pressure changes. In specialist hyperbaric medicine, difficulty equalising the middle ear is a recognised pressure-related risk. If you experience significant discomfort, pain or difficulty equalising during a chamber pressure change, tell the Oxygen Clinic team rather than trying to push through it.

For technical background on middle-ear pressure changes, see the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society resources linked at the end of this guide.

Once you’re inside

What does the chamber feel like once the pressure has stabilised?

Once the chamber reaches its operating conditions, the experience changes from “pressure” to “time”.

You are sitting in a shared Relax area or smaller VIP area rather than undergoing a hands-on procedure. Oxygen Clinic provides seating, Wi-Fi, television, charging, refreshments and an internal toilet, while the VIP area includes reclining massage chairs.

Inside the chamber

Can you actually feel the extra oxygen?

You should not expect a dramatic physical sensation simply because the chamber has a controlled oxygen-enriched environment.

Oxygen Clinic currently publishes operating conditions of approximately 1500 hPa and 32–40% oxygen. The pressure change is something you may physically notice during entry or exit; the oxygen concentration itself is not something this guide claims you will “feel” in a specific way.

The two-hour question

Does two hours feel long?

It depends entirely on the person and how they choose to spend the time.

“The VIP session was 2 hours long but I felt like it went by way too quick.”

04
Comfort

Is it warm, cold, noisy or claustrophobic?

Comfort is subjective, so this is one area where we avoid telling every guest what they will experience.

Crystal mentioned using a blanket because she personally found the chamber a little cool. The chamber is a room-sized shared environment rather than a small single-person tube, but anyone worried about enclosed spaces should speak to the clinic before booking.

Practical point: staff can be contacted using the chamber intercom. Oxygen Clinic’s current terms describe intercom points in the Standard area, VIP area and pressure lock.

What does the pressure feel like when the session ends?

At the end of the session, pressure is returned toward normal atmospheric conditions before exit. Just as during entry, your ears may notice the changing pressure.

Oxygen Clinic’s terms state that entry to and exit from the chamber take place with direct staff participation or assistance.

Oxygen chamber experience FAQs

Do your ears pop in an oxygen chamber?

They can. Changes in chamber pressure can create a feeling of fullness or a need to equalise the middle ear. Some people notice a pop similar to the sensation experienced during air travel.

Does an oxygen chamber hurt your ears?

Significant pain should not simply be ignored. Tell staff if you experience discomfort or difficulty equalising while pressure is changing.

Can you feel the oxygen inside the chamber?

This guide does not claim that the increased oxygen concentration creates a specific sensation. The pressure change during entry and exit is generally the more obvious physical difference.

Does two hours feel long?

That depends on the person. Guests can read, work, listen to content or simply rest. First-time visitor Crystal said her two-hour VIP session “went by way too quick”.

Can you speak to staff while inside?

Yes. Oxygen Clinic’s current terms state that contact with reception is available via the intercom system.

Is Oxygen Clinic a medical treatment service?

No. Oxygen Clinic presents its chamber sessions as a wellness experience, not as medical treatment intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease.
