How Does a Normobaric Chamber Work? Pressure, Oxygen, CO₂ & Hydrogen Explained
Oxygen Clinic does not simply “pump in more oxygen”. The chamber creates a controlled multi-gas environment.
This guide explains what pressure changes, what the published oxygen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen figures mean, and why those numbers should be understood carefully rather than turned into exaggerated health claims.
Oxygen Clinic’s chamber works by controlling four main atmospheric variables: total pressure, oxygen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen. The clinic currently publishes approximately 1500 hPa pressure, 32–40% oxygen, 0.7–2% carbon dioxide and 0.4–0.5% hydrogen. Those figures describe a deliberately different environment from ordinary room air, but they do not by themselves prove a medical benefit.
Four variables are controlled at the same time
The chamber is best understood as a controlled atmosphere rather than as “oxygen only”.
Around 1.5 times the clinic’s stated reference value for average atmospheric pressure.
Higher than the clinic’s stated reference of about 21% in ordinary air.
Intentionally controlled as part of the chamber’s published multi-gas environment.
A deliberately elevated level compared with ordinary outdoor air.
What does 1500 hPa actually change?
Increasing the total pressure changes the partial pressure of every gas in the mixture. In simple terms, pressure and gas composition work together: the amount of pressure contributed by oxygen, carbon dioxide or hydrogen depends on both its share of the mixture and the total chamber pressure.
That is also why the pressure-change stage is the part many visitors notice physically. Your ears may need to equalise in a similar way to an aircraft climb or descent.
What does the higher oxygen level mean?
Oxygen Clinic publishes a chamber oxygen range of 32–40%, compared with around 21% in ordinary air. At the same time, the chamber pressure is higher than normal ambient pressure, so the oxygen environment differs in both composition and pressure.
That does not mean visitors should expect a particular sensation or guaranteed health effect. A person may notice the pressure change far more than the oxygen concentration itself.
Clinical HBOT typically uses specialist medical oxygen protocols under medical oversight. Oxygen Clinic positions its service as a wellness experience, not as clinical HBOT.
Why is carbon dioxide deliberately present?
Carbon dioxide is a normal product of human metabolism and an important respiratory gas. Oxygen Clinic’s chamber intentionally controls it as part of the overall atmosphere rather than treating it as an accidental by-product of occupancy.
The clinic currently publishes a CO₂ figure of 0.7–2%. We do not use that number to promise better circulation, better oxygen release or another physiological outcome, because a mechanism is not the same thing as proof of a benefit from this specific service.
Manufacturer documents and research papers sometimes describe chamber gases as percentages and sometimes as partial pressures. Those are not automatically interchangeable. That is why this article reports Oxygen Clinic’s published figures without pretending they are universal reference values for normal rooms or workplaces.
What is the hydrogen doing in the chamber atmosphere?
Oxygen Clinic publishes hydrogen at 0.4–0.5%. Molecular hydrogen is an active research area, including work on oxidative biology and cell signalling, but research into a molecule does not automatically establish a consumer benefit from every chamber that contains it.
For that reason, Oxygen Clinic can accurately say that hydrogen is part of the controlled atmosphere. It should not turn that fact into claims about anti-ageing, inflammation, immunity or disease treatment without evidence for the exact claim and exposure.
A published preliminary study used a similar 1500 hPa chamber environment with oxygen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen, but involved only 17 healthy volunteers and does not establish broad clinical efficacy.
Why are smoking, vaping, flames and sparks prohibited?
Oxygen-enriched environments require strict control of ignition sources because higher oxygen concentrations can make materials ignite more easily and fires burn more intensely. That is why Oxygen Clinic’s terms prohibit smoking, vaping, open flames, sparks and other ignition risks inside the chamber.
The gas settings are controlled chamber parameters, not something customers should try to reproduce at home. Entry, exit and emergency procedures are managed by staff.
Has this type of chamber environment been studied?
Yes, but the evidence base is still limited. A peer-reviewed preliminary study exposed 17 healthy volunteers to ten two-hour sessions at 1500 hPa with approximately 37% oxygen, 1.079% carbon dioxide and 0.44% hydrogen. It measured cognitive, cardiovascular, autonomic and biochemical outcomes.
Some measured variables changed, while others did not. The authors also reported markers that could be interpreted in more than one way. A small preliminary study is useful for generating questions, but it is not enough to justify broad treatment or wellness-effect claims.
The technical system disappears into a simple two-hour visit
Once the chamber reaches its operating conditions, the customer experience is intentionally straightforward. You sit in the Relax or VIP area, use the available Wi-Fi, television and charging, read, listen to something, work quietly or sleep.
Compression and decompression happen during entry and exit.
The atmosphere is maintained while guests remain inside.
Guests can contact reception through the intercom.
Seating, refreshments, a toilet and digital facilities are part of the setup.
How does a normobaric chamber work? Quick answers
What pressure does Oxygen Clinic use?
Oxygen Clinic currently publishes an operating pressure of approximately 1500 hPa.
What gases are controlled inside the chamber?
The clinic publishes controlled oxygen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen levels alongside the increased chamber pressure.
Why does pressure matter?
Total pressure affects the partial pressure of every gas in the mixture and is also why your ears may need to equalise during entry and exit.
Why is carbon dioxide included?
It is deliberately controlled as part of the multi-gas chamber atmosphere. Oxygen Clinic does not use its presence alone as evidence of a health benefit.
Why is hydrogen included?
Hydrogen is one of the published components of the chamber atmosphere. Molecular hydrogen is being studied scientifically, but that does not prove a particular outcome from this service.
Is this clinical hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
No. Oxygen Clinic describes its sessions as a wellness experience rather than clinical HBOT or medical treatment.
